Some Vachanas of Mahatma Sri Basaveshwar

11.
One who kills is untouchable;
One who feeds on foul food is an outcaste;
Then what is caste or who is of the high caste?
There is only one high class(type) of devotees,
And tehy wish well upon all beings ... 2
12.
Does not a crow call to its flock when it sees a peck of grain?
Does not a hen call its family when it sees a chunk of food?

Being a true devotee,
You care and share with your fellow beings as your own family,
Otherwise you have less worth than a crow or a hen ....

I do not desire for the status of Brahma, Vishnu or Rudra;
Lord, just bless me so that I always have
the opportunity to know and serve Your devotees ...

The worldly life is like a candle flame set out in the wind
See! this wealth is like the crowd at the market fair;
Do not ruin yourself believing that wealth is permanent;
Remember and pray our Lord Kudala Sangama 2
13.
Melt my mind and cleanse me from its dark impurities,
Put me to the fire-tests and purify me into sterling,
Cut me, beat me, and make me fit,
Make me an oranment for the feet of
Your Sharanas and protect me, Lord Kudala Sangama. 2
14.
If a pond, a brook or a well was rendered dry,
Then moss, shell and conch will appear;
If an ocean goes dry then jewels and pearls appear;
When Sharanas of the Lord speak out,
Then we can see Ishtalinga (God) ... 2

15.
I had no knowledge of directions, earth, and sky;
I did not know the presence of the universe within Ishtalinga;
I experienced bliss as Ishtalinga touched;
Loke a hailstone falling in the ocean,
With no feeling of distinction,
I was saying 'Shiva, Shiva' ...2
16.
Do not steal, nor kill, nor speak untruth,
Do not be angry, nor be scornful of others,
Do not boast of yourself, nor blame others,
These ways of heart and conduct declare your purity,
These ways brings you the love of Lord Kudala Sangama (God) 2

17.
I engage in farming to serve Guru;
I engage in a trade to serve Ishtalinga (God);
I work for others to serve Jangama;
Whatever I work I undertake, I know
You shower me with blessings to enjoy
Whatever rewards of wealth I receive from You,
I dedicate them to You in service, and
I repay all the riches You have given me, I promise... 2
18.
A Sharana is severely just, not wavered by fear or favour;
Thus armed, a Sharana dares to take on the evils of world,
He (or she) blazes across
following the shining path of glorious light (God) .. 2

19.
On the same earth are Shudra's hut and a deity's temple,
Water is same fr worhsip or for cleansing,
To a person who 'knows oneself',
All castes are one (human race is one) ..
2
20.
If you should speak, your words should be like pearls strung on a thread;
If you should speak, your words should be like the luster shed by a ruby;
If you should speak, your words should be like a flash of a crystal beam;
If you should speak, Lord must say, 'Aye, aye, it is true, it is true';
But if your deed betrays your word,
can you win the favour of Lord Kudala Sangama ? 2
